How the LA Fires are Impacting Pets and How YOU Can Help

by Katie Xu

The ongoing LA fires have had a devastating impact on both people and animals. Pets are among the most vulnerable during evacuations, as many families have little time to gather supplies before fleeing their homes. Sadly, some pets become lost or left behind, adding to the chaos and heartbreak.

Animal shelters quickly become overwhelmed during wildfire season, taking in both strays and pets whose owners can no longer care for them. The Pasadena Humane Society specifically has welcomed over 250 pets in the days after the fires started. This overcrowding makes it difficult for shelters to provide the necessary care and resources. Wildlife is also affected, with animals forced out of their natural habitats, increasing the risk of encounters with pets in urban areas.

During this difficult time, small actions can have a big impact. Hat Bazaar is currently reaching out to animal rescues and shelters in Los Angeles to see if we can help.

Currently, you can help by fostering or adopting from overcrowded shelters or donating supplies like pet food, blankets, and crates. You could also spread the word on social media to help others become aware of how they can help.

With wildfires becoming more frequent due to climate change, it's essential for everyone to prepare an emergency kit with food, water, medications, and comfort items for their pets, while also ensuring that ID tags and microchip information are up to date. These small actions can ensure that evacuations and natural disasters are not worsened by the loss of a pet.
